Winzum Spotlight: Break & Symmetry Recordings

History

Aside from the online competitions, one of our main goals here at Winzum has always been to try and shine a light on as many remarkable businesses, artists, record labels, pubs and venues as possible, hence why we have started a weekly “Winzum Spotlight” blog series.

Each Winzum Spotlight blog will focus on somebody, or some people, that we think are worth shouting about. First up, the versatile, multi-faceted and downright exceptional Jungle and Drum & Bass producer Break, alongside his label Symmetry Recordings…

Who is Break?

Jungle and Drum & Bass enthusiasts will know exactly who Break is, but those who are less knowledgeable about this essential part of UK underground dance music may not be quite so clued in.

Put simply; Break is one of the standout names in 21st century Drum & Bass music, taking the blueprint made by pioneers such as Goldie and boosting it forwards with extraordinary musical nous and trailblazing modern production techniques.

There are two reasons why you will always recognise a Break track: one is the delightful fusion of Reggae, Dub and true musicality that he brings to the table, and the other is the outrageously crisp and weighty sonics of his productions. Just check out the Break track “Who Got Da Funk” to see what we mean…

A versatile Drum & Bass icon

There are plenty of top-tier artists in the worlds of Jungle and Drum & Bass, however it is genuinely rare to find somebody as versatile as Break. His tracks range from the Reggae inspired cut “Free Your Mind” with MC Fats, all the way through to bona fide hands-in-the-air anthems such as “Last Goodbye” with singer Celestine.

Indeed, this shouldn’t be surprising either, because alongside Break’s endeavours as a solo Drum & Bass producer, he is also in a Dub & Reggae band called Degrees of Freedom with long-term collaborator Nyo. You just cannot argue with Break’s versatility – it’s a huge reason for his success over the last couple of decades.

Symmetry Recordings: An overview of the label

Back in 2006 Break established his label Symmetry Recordings, and since then the imprint has been responsible for some of the finest sounds coming out of the Drum & Bass realm. Much like the producer’s own music, the Symmetry Recordings back-catalogue is full of delights from across the spectrum of Drum & Bass and Jungle, hence why it is so universally admired. Furthermore, Symmetry Recordings have featured releases from some of the largest names in the scene, often collaborating with Break himself to create unique and pluralistic new music. Iconic producers such as Total Science, Mefjus and LSB have all lent their musical passions to the label, for example.
